Molecular Sieves

Appearing as small opaque pinkish beads, molecular sieves are highly porous crystalline metal-alumino silicates. Compared with other desiccants, the distinctive feature is the uniformity pore size in the crystal-lattice structure which is part of the manufacturing process. As the pore size on molecular sieve particles is controlled, it allows the end product to be more precise then other desiccants so different pore sizes can be found, each one with a few different properties. Absorption will occur only for molecules with smaller diameters than the molecular sieves’ pore size larger molecules being excluded from absorption. Preferentially absorbed are molecules of greater polarity which makes molecular sieve ideal for absorption of water from liquids and gases as water molecules are both polar and very small. Molecular sieve is classified by its pore size in angstroms, some of the most used being 3A, 4A, 5A, 8A (10X) and 10A, also known as 13X. This feature allows the selection of a molecular sieve which can absorb water yet exclude most of other molecules or other desiccants which will absorb bigger molecules like aromatics or carbon dioxides. Molecular sieve absorbs up to 22% of its own weight and can hold moisture to temperatures well past 450°F (230°C), and because of its high affinity for moisture, molecular sieve is able to bring the relative humidity in packages down as low as 10% RH.

Applications:

  1. Dehydration of many kinds of liquids (say Ethanol).
  2. Dehydration of air.
  3. Dehydration of Refrigerant.
  4. Dehydration of natural gas or methane.
  5. Dehydration of cracked gas, ethylene, ethyne, propylene or butadiene

Zeolite Molecular Sieve are crystalline metal aluminosilicates having a threedimensional interconnecting network of silica and alumina tetrahedra. Natural water of hydration is removed from this network by heating to produce uniform cavities which selectively adsorb molecules of a specific size. A 4 to 8-mesh sieve is normally used in gasphase applications, while the 8 to 12-mesh type is common in liquidphase applications. The powder forms of the 3A, 4A, 5A and 13X sieves are suitable for specialized applications. Long known for their drying capacity (even to 90°C), molecular sieves have recently demonstrated utility in synthetic organic procedures, frequently allowing isolation of desired products from condensation reactions that are governed by generally unfavorable equilibria. These synthetic zeolites have been shown to remove water, alcohols (including methanol and ethanol), and HCl from such systems as ketimine and enamine syntheses, ester condensations, and the conversion of unsaturated aldehydes to polyenals. Divalent calcium ions in place of sodium cations give apertures of ACUROSORB 5A which exclude molecules of effective diameter >5Å, e.g., all 4-carbon rings, and iso-compounds.

Major Applications:

  • Separation of normal paraffins frombranched-chain and cyclic hydrocarbons, removal of H2S, CO2 and mercaptans from natural gas. Molecules adsorbed include nC4H10, nC4H9OH, C3H8 to C22H46, and dichlorodifluoro-methan.

ACUROSORB CMS220 carbon molecular sieve is a new kind of adsorbent developing from 1970,and is excellent non-pole carbon material. It can be used as separate the nitrogen from the oxygen under normal temperature and pressure. To compare with tradition, PSA has some advantages: the investment is lower, start-up time is short: the cost for Nitrogen is lower. It has been widely applied in petroleum chemical industry, metal heat treatment, electron production and keep-fresh of foodstuff.

ACUROSORB CMS 220 Carbon molecular sieve technical index:
  • Diameter: 1.6¬2.2mm
  • Absorption period: 2×60 second
  • Bulk density: 630-660 g/l
  • Crushing strength: ≥100N/p Min
